Is it okay to get custom wood gifts for a crafter and not know much about him or her? There are several times when I would receive a craft book as a gift and be surprised at how knowledgeable I was in the crafts. Others have received books that are very basic and they do not know how to use them. Here are some things to consider when choosing a gift for a crafter.
First, make sure you know that the crafter knows something. Can they tell you what they make? Do they need advice? Do they have references you can call? Can you ask them to explain what they are making so that you know what is possible?
Second, don’t be afraid to ask for help. If the chapter needs help with something, they will be happy to give it to you. If they don’t want to give you any advice, you might ask someone who does it for a living. Never make the mistake of assuming that they know what you are talking about. You might get something that is much better made than you thought. Just keep looking!
Third, look for something that is fun to make. You don’t want to give something that you think they might not be that interested in. Look for something that will be interesting to them. They will appreciate something that you took time out of your day to make. Just make sure that it is worth your time.
Fourth, try to choose something that you know they will be happy to use. If they make jewelry, go with that. If they make hand crafted toys, look for something like that. If they make scrapbooks, go with scrapbook materials that they enjoy using. Even though it is not something that they would normally purchase, it might be something that they love and find it enjoyable to do.
Fifth, let them know how important they are to you. It does not matter if you do not know how to write a thank you. Let them know that it means everything to you. Tell them that it is a gift for a crafter. It will make them feel wonderful.
Six, know how much of a budget you have. If you do not know how much you have to spend, you should not buy a gift for a chapter on impulse. Instead, ask them for a suggested price range. If they have a specific amount of money to spend, tell them that as well. This will save you time, aggravation, and possibly money.
Seven, have other family members or friends to help out. Let them know that this gift is needed, and that you are glad that they are helping. They may even think of getting a gift for a crafter that you did not. That is a great way to show your appreciation without even saying anything.
