I have been having a heck of a time finding a nice “Baby’s First Christmas” ornament for Lulu in stores this year. I found some cute options of Etsy, but alas, money is tight and a muuuuuuch cheaper option came to me via pinterest…Salt Dough Ornaments
it didn’t go so well.
What I learned:
First recipe(not from this pin):
The first recipe didn’t mention water temperature. I used cold water…mistake. The dough was very coarse. Also, it called for just 3/4c of water…very dry.
For baking, it suggested 325 for one hour. As you can see, this heated the dough too quickly and too much…baking it. This “puffed” the dough up, creating air pockets. Also, browned the dough, with was not the result I expected or desired.
Needless to say, these got chucked.
Second attempt (which I tweaked):
2 cups of flour
1 cup of salt
1 cup of warm, almost hot, water
Mix the salt and flour together first then add the warm (borderline hot) water. The dough may be very sticky, but keep kneading. I put the dough onto a floured surface for kneading, and that way I could control how much flour I needed to get the right consistency. The result was a much MUCH smoother dough.
I rolled it out to around 1/8″ to 1/4″ thick.
Baked them at 200f for 3 hours. One site suggested flipping them halfway through…I did that and soo noticed the ornaments curling…so I flipped them back.
Tomorrow we will seal them with spray varnish. I think I am going to try to make some more tomorrow also. They would make great gifts!
